Is Cool, taste?

Watching  Merchant of Cool  scares me!  It seems that kids are getting older and older, whatever happened to innocence!!  What I’m referring to is the young girl who is 13 but acts like she is 18 through her dress, make-up and her behavior.  She dances with boys like she is in adult night club,  I wonder what her parents said after they watched the vidio.  I know my reaction would be to ground her for life. (Oh my God, I sound like my mother!)

However, media loves these ‘tweeny boppers’, they are their best customers!   Why?  Well, they definitely have more money than we did as teens, we were lucky to get 5 bucks a week, I can only imagine what kids get nowadays.    Teens, expecially tweens are easy to influence.  They like the idea of being cool, and the ways to be cool is to buy into what media has to offer.   The more that is offered the more teens will buy.

Can you imagine the amount of stress this puts on parents?  Parents want their kids to be cool  so they will buy their children whatever they basically want, no one wants a ’geek’ for a child, parents want their kids to be cool.

Competition also plays a huge role in this as well, parents will compete with other parents in buyging things for their children such as the latest fashions, cell phones, mp3 players… the list goes on and on.  The media does not only love the tweens but they love the parents, they have captured their audience in which they are making their millions off of.

I have to admit, I have bought into the media ploys for certain things for my daughter, my family and myself, and to be quite honest I don’t think I’ll stop, I am part of this thing called CONSUMERISM! (doesn’t mean  I like it!)  Who isn’t?

The following clip gives you a little bit of an idea of how much $$$ tweens actually spend in Canada, (actually what parents pay)

Bohemian Rhapsody (The NEW VERSION)

I am a huge American Idol fan!   Actually I don’t care who wins, it’s the auditions that  I love!!!  It’s by far the best part ot the whole series.  There is some really great talent out there but there is also a lot of tone deaf people out there as well!

I don’t know about you all, but when someone is laughing or look like they are pain while I am singing, that’s my cue to quit and get the hell out of there!!  I am not going to question why I didn’t get accepted onto the next round, or ask for another chance, I would save whatever face I have left and get my sorry ass out of sight!!  But this is the joy of watching the show!   It’s great when you get to watch some really good singers (BONUS) but make way for the next ‘laugh your gut out’ performance.  These are the performers that really make the show and make me want to continue watching it.

American Idol is a huge source of modern culture and entertainment, as listed by Paul as one of the 20 reasons why Mass Media is important.  American Idol is new and accepted in this day and age.  Nothing like this type of show was around when I was going group (80’s).  There were shows with Ed Sulivan as the host of “Rising Stars” (I think that was what it was called) and we would all sit around as a family and watch it.    If my daughter was older I would let her sit up and watch American Idol with us.

American Idol lets us appreciate that there are people out there that are really great performers who get their moment in the spotlight while still respecting those who are brave enough to even go on screen with millions of people watching them who sing as bad as ‘Nellie Olson’ on Little House on the Prairie.  It’s amazing how the networks make money off of bad talent and the misfortune of others (like the one’s who don’t make it)!

The following clip is ‘Red’, one of the not-so-great singers who sings Bohemian Rhapsody for the American Idol judges.  I give him an ‘A’ for effort!!  I’m sure I couldn’t do much better. Enjoy.

New at this

Like many of you, this is my first time doing something like this…blogging.  When I signed up for this course I never thought I would be doing something like this.  I’ve heard of it before but I didn’t think I would ever be doing it or have a use for it.  Well…here I am …doing it.  I’m not too sure what to write for my first blog, I thought I would save comments on the readings after tomorrow’s class.  So I will talk about what I do like about Mass Communication…T.V (expecially after 9:00 when my daughter is in bed.)  My favorite show is HOUSE and anything having to do with crime (CSI, CRIMINAL MINDS) and I am patiently waiting for LOST to come back on.  I also like all the celeb gossip shows, I like to keep updated on what’s going in the Celeb world (true or not).

I am kind of a geek when it comes to the internet, I only use it for research and emails.  I wish I had time to do more things like chating with family and friends or playing games or even sending more emails, but I don’t.  Between school and my family, especially my daughter there is little time for anything else.  It’s kind of funny though, I’ll have time to blog.

I think I am going to like this class, actually I’m pretty sure I will.  With the class being so large, it will be interesting to hear and read classmates views on things.  The interesting part of this whole class is that we will not only be learning from our Prof, Paul, but from each other.  I look forward to reading your blogs and I hope you will enjoy mine, I will try to make them interesting for you all to read so that you don’t get bored and quit reading half way through and switch to another blog, ( I speak from experience).

Before I go, I wanted to tell you the story behind my Blog Name: YOU CAN’T SEE ME!!!.  My Brother-in-law had this camuflauge T-shirt and it had YOU CAN’T SEE ME!  on it and I don’t know why but we all found it really funny especially considering he’s a big BUSH MAN (hunter, outdoorsman, etc.)  I just thought I’d share this little piece of info with you.

Happy Blogging!
